Agreement between FIDE and Russian Badminton Federation.   no comments

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov signed cooperation agreement with the President of the Russian Badminton Federation Sergei Shakhrai on the 1 July 2008 in Moscow. The subject of this agreement is popularization of badminton among FIDE members as the most optimal for physical activity of chess players, and also popularization of chess among badminton players.
The parties are planning together develop and realize social programmes aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle and mass sports, involvement chess and badminton players in them and also experience and information exchange necessary for the successful development of chess and badminton in the Russian Federation and abroad. The agreement supposes organization of chess tournaments among badminton players and badminton competitions among chess players and also media coverage of the main points of joint activities.

The Elista FIDE Office is pleased to publish the July 2008 FIDE Rating List which includes tournaments up to 15 June 2008. World Champion Viswanathan Anand retains the top slot but
attention has been drawn to the rise of 17-year-old Magnus Carlsen of Norway.
Download the July 2008 FIDE Rating List in text format. Search for individual ratings. A number of improvements have been introduced such as color statistics for
each player. Players can check in advance calculations of tournaments reported for the October rating list, such as the Aerosvit Tournament in Foros which ended after the closing date of 15 June 2008 for tournaments to
be included in the July list.

Mandatory Pre-Registration of Tournaments.

Please note that the pre-registration of tournaments is mandatory. Rating

Officers should register their events at least one month in advance on the FIDE

Ratings Server. This shall assist organizers in avoiding conflicts of schedules

by knowing in advance the world chess calendar. And players are assured that a

FIDE-registered tournament shall be rated.

The Elista FIDE Office thanks all National Chess Federations, Rating Officers

and Arbiters for their help in producing the quarterly FIDE Rating List.

We remind Rating Officers to please upload the pgn files of the tournament to

the FIDE Ratings Server.

Players may course corrections, if any, through their National Federation Rating

Officer.

World Mind Sports Games Notice for Journalists   no comments

Journalists from outside China wishing to cover the World Mind Sports Games in Beijing from October 3rd to October 18th 2008, will need to register before July 31st.
The Media Accreditation Application form can be downloaded
here.
The form should be completed in English and returned to FIDE by July
25
th for checking. It must be stamped by the reporter’s media
organisation and their countries (region) individual sports
federation. Details of hotels can be found at
www.2008wmsg.org and all expenses are to be covered by the reporters themselves.
There will be no on the spot registration. The accreditation form
will also be used for submission for an invitation in order to obtain
a visa. There will be a shuttle service to and from the airport and
hotel.

World Youth Championships 2008 - First Deadline for Entries   no comments

All national chess federations are reminded that the deadline for submission and payment is before 15 July 2008 - there will be a 5% discount for the reservations for hotels  After this deadline, there will be no discounts.

Participating federations are encouraged to use Reg Form 8 - Payment Worksheet when submitting their registrations.

Visit of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov to Kiev   no comments

The president of FIDE Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Kiev on June, 24th where he had a meeting with the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Leonid Chernovetskiy. The parties discussed questions of potential cooperation. The mayor of Kiev expressed readiness of the Ukrainian party in carrying out of the important chess competitions under the aegis of FIDE: one of stages of Women Grand Prix in 2009 and Grand Prix in 2010. Mr. Chernovetsky supported the initiative of the FIDE President to introduce chess at schools of Kiev. The mayor of Kiev also expressed interest in realization of the project of building of the chess centre in the Ukrainian capital.

The press conference of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov took place in the Ukrainian national news agency. After the conferece Kirsan Ilyumzhinov awarded the winners of the chess competition held by the newspaper “Novaya” under patronage of the President of FIDE.

Olympiad offer for Federations

FIDE will be purchasing new DGT e-boards for the Olympiad in Dresden. The Presidential Board decided that these would be offered on a pro rata basis to federations at the close of the Olympiad for a price of €299 per unit. This is a substantial discount to the normal price of over €500 and each unit includes:

DGT e-board, Walnut/Maple, serial port connection, Timeless piece set (2 extra queens)

DGT XL clocks (red or beige)

Connection material

All federations entering two teams will be able to purchase 4 units and federations entering one team can purchase 2 units. In the event that the offer is not fully subscribed, then federations can offer to buy additional units.

Please send your order to the FIDE Secretariat at office@fide.com by August 31st and indicate if you would be interested in purchasing additional units if they are available. You will be expected to take the equipment with you when you leave Dresden. You will need to buy a ToMa licence if you do not already have one, to operate the boards on the web but DGT will offer these at a 50% discount to the normal price. DGT are also arranging free seminars in Dresden for those that do not have experience with the e-boards.
